Description of the flag

The flag of the "1st Regiment Cavalry VA. Volunteers" (VA. = Virginia state, U.S.), 36" x 46", yellow silk and trimmed with yellow-silk fringe; c. 1890s.

This flag looks like it could have been used during the "Spanish-American War" (April 21 - Dec 10, 1898). However, I received this reply from a "Force Structure and Organizational History Division" researcher at the "U.S. Army Center of Military History" in Washington, DC, after inquiring with them: "Unfortunately, it appears we do not have any records of a "1st Cavalry Regiment VA Volunteers," and that no such unit appears in federal service during the Spanish-American War. However, according to the Library of Virginia finding aids (https://ead.lib.virginia.edu/vivaxtf/view?docId=lva/vi00871.xml), a 1st Regiment Cavalry existed from 1890 until the regiment was disbanded in 1897. The volunteer units during this period are not necessarily perpetuated by existing National Guard units and operated under a different system. Sorry, we cannot provide any further information."
